Fuel tank locking ring question

I have to change the fuel pump on my xj, I was looking at the locking ring today and i don't see where I can seat the brass punch the ring looks mostly flush. Can someone describe how to best go about this?

Not sure if yours is the same as mine (96) but there were tabs that I used to turn it. I know it isnt a prefered practice but I used a flat head screw driver. I think as with anything if you are careful you will be fine.

My 99 looks like this.

Here is a good write up.

I don't see any obvious tabs just a metal ring with some jagged triangular tabs on the inside ring but I'm pretty sure that part doesn't turn. it's definitely nothing like the second picture my 89 has a steel tank with plastic skid.

I found the tabs and started banging away at it counter clockwise and only succeeded in bending the tabs over... Then the rain started pouring. :hammer:

I'm going to hit it first thing tomorrow hopefully I won't need to drop the tank to wrestle the thing off.

With mine (88) there were rectangle tabs that stuck out... There are also smaller quire ones but those bend easier

Put some wd40 on the outside first :)

good idea!

EDIT: All done now. rockauto says the carter kit comes with a bosch OE pump, it didn't.
