Fuel Tank
 

I have a 1996 Cherokee with a stock fuel tank that is slightly crushed but needs replacing. We have a 1999 wreck that we've pulled the tank from and from videos about the 85-96 the design is different and i cannot find any videos on the subject. So the question is will a 1999 Jeep Cherokee fuel tank directly bolt into the 1996 or need some modification?

The wiring is different, as is is the sending unit, and mounting brackets. Not sure about the tank. The fuel pressure regulator is by the fuel rail for 96 and older, and part of the filter for 97-01, so that needs adressed as well.

Doesn't the 96 still have the fuel pump on the front of the tank? 97+ have the pump in the top.

yup and 96 has the fuel regulator on the fuel pump, the fuel filter is external on the 96, the wiring is different, the tank is metal, and something else I can't remember right now.

So it's just a whole wiring mess to do. Well thank you for the help.

The good news is... tanks are a dime a dozen... cut 2 straps with tin snips and they fall out. Cut the lines and wires a foot or 2 from the tank top, go home and clean it out. Should be cheap.

At my Pick&Pull, they take the tanks out and drain them before they put them up for salvage. Usually they are in the cargo area when you find them. Most often the pumps are removed to drain them and placed inside the vehicle as well. IDK if this is a NYS standard or done for fire prevention. No power tools except battery powered ones are allowed in the yard. If you need something cut out with a torch, you have to pay them to do it at their leisure. A friend of mine needed a front axle and they cut the control arms with a friction saw. He had to pay for it and wait a couple of days to get it. It seems to me it would be just as easy for him to use an impact wrench that day.

You need a 96 tank. 97+ won't work.
