Default Fuel Tank

I need to replace my fuel tank and there are several makers. Which brand should I buy?

You didn't give much vehicle info but if it's a '91 with a 20gal tank the one in the link below is the cheapest of the two most popular brands.

I was reading that you can install a grand cherokee gas tank and those are 25 gallon tanks and use the same fuel pumps and senders . you can get one from a pick and pull yard .

Do you know what year model(s) that I would be able to use?

Dorman off amazon is a great tank. It's slightly larger, about 23gal (if I recall) and it's quality.

How are these larger tanks going to work with a tow hitch. It was all I could do to make my hitch work with the OEM tank and skid plate.

They are PLASTIC. Get one from craigslist if someone's parting one out or from a junkyard. Takes 2 minutes with a cordless sawzall to cut the bolts and pop it out. The junkyard always empties them anyway. Clean the inside with alcohol and a rag for any sludge. Cheap and easy. Call the places first and check for availability. Check to see if all years work onlline.

Prior to 97, they are not plastic. They also have a different design entirely. (Access on front of tank vs. access on top of tank).

True, but I have to wonder if the newer tank and pump assembly could be used in an older XJ. If I had an older steel tank, I'd sure be interested in giving it a try.

My buddy, oldblue#2 on here, has a plastic tank in his yard and has a '94. He said it's a giant headache to make it work, he's an electrician by trade and the wiring alone would take some real time to figure out an adapter. He has a Dorman tank off Amazon with a factory hitch and no issues
