Default Temperature sensor & Sending Unit

Hello, I need some help.

I purchased a stock 1997 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) 4.0 and swapped the engine to a stock 1995 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) 4.0. The '95 head has a temperature sending unit at the back of the head and I broke the sensor in the process of installing the engine. The '97 harness does not have a connector for a temperature sending unit ( I attached a picture of a replacement) where it should be on the '95 harness. I have read vague answers that the '97 jeep has changed the Coolant Temperature Sensor to have a dual function of sending the temperature to the ECU and the dashboard gauge.

My 1997 jeep does not have a traditional temperature gauge/display so I cannot actually see it working but how or when would I know if the jeep is overheating? Thank you for your help, I've never encountered this before in the older XJ's.
