Question FUEL PUMP REWIRE 90 renix 4.0

Never really had to rewire a fuel pump before. the previous owner had a wire running straight from the pump to the battery and i have to disconnect the battery each time i get out to shut the pump off. what is a better way to wire this darn thing up to come on with the key or a switch or something. the harness in my jeep is a mess... i never liked dealing with wire harnesses. if someone could give me some insight on how to go about this id be grateful. also being hardwired like this would it cause access fuel to be pushed through. thing seems to be running out of gas pretty quickly.

The fuel pump gets it's power from the fuel pump ballast resistor on the drivers side fender. I'd start there and make sure it's intact and that you're getting voltage there. Perhaps that got broken, and the previous owner couldn't figure that out? Picture at http://cruiser54.com/?p=35 (be sure to go through all the other tips, especially refreshing the grounds.)
