Fuel pump replacement
Well, after talking to a couple of shops I decided to replace my fuel pump due to my cold start issues. The mechanics were not positive that was the problem, but recommended to replace anyways (145k on original pump).
Dont want to scare anyone into not replacing their pumps, but it was a nightmare!
Removal wasnt too bad aside from the gas that dripped in my face an eyes
Assembling the unit was pretty strait foreward.
Install was horrible. I left the tank in and trying to line everything up took forever. According to the Haynes manual, the lockring is supposed to slip right on and you can tighten with your hand, NO WAY. I had to force it on and use a brass screw (couldnt locate a punch) to spin it back on. Keep in mind I didnt drop the tank so I am doing all of this twisted around under the Jeep. And of course the lock ring got mangled and wouldnt seat right.
As much as I banged the assembly around inside the tank I was really suprised that it started and ran. I was even more suprised that the gauge worked.
After all that work I am pretty sure it wont fix my starting problem, just have a feeling......
I attached a couple of photos of the old pump. The second one has the left side circled. I didnt pay attention to the new pump but the old one was cracked in that area, anyone know what its purpose is if anything?

The first fuel pump is always hard. The next time you do one it won't take long at all. You could try some new injectors if you still are having problems.

Jeep sat for a few hours and was still difficult to start when sitting for an extended period. So....

X 3, Yeah, if you don't mangle the retaining ring during your first fuel pump change, you weren't trying hard enough. Like Bobby said, after the nightmare of your first, it's easy after that.

Yep, X2 on this one. I found out the hard way that the lock ring has to be straight in order for the tank to seal properly. I had to straiten mine up after the mangling that I put on it!! It worked like champ after I got it straight, but it was a major PITA!! Double check it, because you don't want a gas leak!!

I'm curious as to why you didn't drop the tank. It seems to me that'd be the easiest way to do it. I've dropped several tanks in my day, and it's not that big of a job.

On this subject is it kewl to get a standard replacement or is there an upgrade you should get? In my case I have the 19# Injectors from a mustang I havent put in yet.

Because you don't have to. Now that I've done it, I could change my FP in about 20 minutes. It's pretty easy, once you figure it all out. The body positioning is the worst part of the job, that, and the whole smelling like gas for a couple of days thing!!

but you do on the 1998 and up the pump is located directly on top of the tank not out to the front like the older models. but on his it would have been cake to just leave the tank and remove it on the jeep
