I replaced the fuel pump on my 1987 XJ without dropping the tank but when driving on gravel roads at slow speeds the pump would get really loud. I could kill the engine with the switch for a few seconds then restart and the pump would be quite for a few miles then get loud again. I changed pumps 3 times with same results, finally this weekend I dropped the tank and realized that the rubber grommet from the original pump return line was still in the tank and not allowing the new pump to seat properly. After taking it out and seating the new pump properly, no more noise. Just thought I would share this in case someone else has this problem.
