96 Cherk 4.0L I need a source for a replacement intank fuel-pump/sending unit assembly. Mine was leaking very slightly, we thought it was the old pump unit to tank gasket. but when the mechanic took it out to clean and reseal it it turned to be rusted on the external stub extension under the rubber connector. they have made a "fix" using a tube insert and gas-proof epoxy caulk. but I should get a replacement for Fuel pump assembly. However the shops suppliers no longer list it as available. Can anyone point me to a source for a replacement?
right now I'm feeling really frustrated with this old Jeep---I'm about to name it "Money Pit"

Wondering..if the rest is fine, maybe grab one, maybe even back to 86?, (but not past 96), from the JY and see if you can swap the rusted part.
If you use google to search chreokeeforum.com you should find info on what others did with their 96 pump problems. I gather it's just that one year can be a problem.

Yep,1996 is the problem. There was a guy on here at least a year ago who was adapting a post '96 tank and fuel pumping system to his I believe '97. Installation was done but was trying to figure out the wiring. I was away for good while so don't know how he made out.
I'm guessing that Crown unit is something new. Never saw it while doing a web search.

Search for crown 5003869AA on google.
We no longer have to hack together parts to get our fuel issues resolved. I feel a lot better about my 96 Cherokee now. Thank you Crown!

THANK YOU Crown!
PS. Sure must be A LOT of 96's in the world for Crown to offer a product for such a limited application. I'm NOT complaining mind you. From their site:

yup I simply googled "1996 Jeep Cherokee fuel pump ASSEMBLY" and got hits on a number of suppliers stocking the Crown unit. Prices ranging from almost $240 down to $185 ---at carparts.com where I ordered mine. the usual Jeep specialty houses were all at the high end. that does not include shipping of course but even with extra charges for "overnight shipping" (which is based on business days) because I need it ASAP the cost was not much over 200. Nothing is too good for The Mobile MoneyPit

Yep, it's only money.
$190.67 shipped so not much difference.

I just checked on the price of a Crown fuel pump for a '99. $152.62 shipped. Not a bad price for the '96 then.

damn smart move!!! Factor in the typical survival rate and the fact that the vast majority of the running survivors have fuel pump assemblies that are nearing the end of their functional lifespan. Mine has 200K+ miles on it and i imagine the vast majority have closer to 150K than 100K.
My 96 Cherk had the little connector tube that is formed as part of the main mounting plate deteriorate underneath and inside the clamped-on neoprene tube that connects it to the main fuel line where it is pretty well protected from the exterior elements. Others appear to have experienced the something similar. its not something you can cobble a work around repair for (let alone a permanent replacement for) without some pretty advanced metal forming skills and equipment, I can see how it might be done but its simpler and cheaper to replace the whole unit. My professional mechanic with a lot of under structure experience had an hour or two of head scratching and then a couple hours work to create a repair that we hope will hold until the replacement unit arrives. It'd be a whole lot easier to do that at home or in a shop "on the road" (or trailside) or simply as a prophylactic "repair" before an expensive disaster happens.
I'd say that producing it was a pretty astute market decision. Consider the number of supply sources that want our money; each of them will want to have a supply in inventory 'cause when you need a fuel pump you generally need is ASAP (and if nothing else they'll make a profit on the expedited S/H $$$ we'll need). Each supplier will assume/hope that they will get larger share of the calculated market than the competition, so the gross wholesale order to Crown will probably exceed that actual number of retail orders placed. Like i said an astute market decision
