My fuel gauge on the 89' XJ has been reading approximately this:

for the past week. Before that, it was acting pretty sporadic, going from 1/4 to full and back a few times when I had about half of a tank.
The gauge isn't really "pegged" to that amount, it seems to go down a bit as fuel gets used, but it's clearly much to high on the gauge.
Any insight as to what this problem might be? Ground, sending unit? I couldn't seem to find the fuel tank sending unit on Rockauto, my usual source for OEM-type parts, is it integrated with the pump? I couldn't find much information on this issue in the google.
Thanks in advance,
Evan

Figured it might be that. Any idea where I could get one of these, (stealership?) and what years are compatible? Like I said, Rockauto, which rarely lets me down, doesn't seem to have this part. I would prefer not to have to use the JY, but if they are pricey...Originally Posted by highmileage
Sending unit in the tank most likely.

I've checked with autozone and o'reilly's you know the usual and they do not sell the sending unit separately. At least where I live you have to buy the whole fuel pump...

Yeah, but that is expensive. Originally Posted by 4.slow95

Quick question, is your speedo broken too? if not why are you going 50km/h and taking a picture of the dash? Just thought id ask as someone was going to sooner or later.Originally Posted by EvstaG

Haha I figured someone would ask eventually, I had a passenger take the picture; I'm not one to use my phone while driving. Originally Posted by Knlin515

Have you checked the wires?
I am not 100% sure but I think when you unplug the sending unit the gauge goes to the extreme top when the key is on.
Everything under the jeep is easy to access and see.
Under the back seat the wires go through the floor.
