Default Fuel gauge issue

I have a 97 xj and lately the needle on the fuel gauge has been doing everything but telling me how much fuel i have bouncing around and saying it's way past full like a half inch or so or the gas light will come on right after i fill it just stupid stuff like that. I'm kind of thinking it's an issue with the sending unit. I was wanting to hear some opinions. So thank's for the help in advance

It could very well be the sending unit.

You can buy a fuel pump module assembly for your Jeep from a local auto parts store, unplug the fuel pump connector, plug in the new pump. turn the key to RUN (the pump will run for about two seconds), move the float through its full range, up and down, slowly while a helper watches the fuel gauge. If it works okay you'll need to replace the fuel pump module assembly.

If the fuel gauge does not work properly you have wiring or PCM issue - take the pump back from where you bought it. Take it back anyway because you ran the pump dry [tee hee]. Buy a new Bosch or Carter module from a different store.

You could try to uncouple the fuel pump connector at the fuel tank and see if there's any corrosion in the pins and pin cavities.

Priorities. You're putting a nice-to-have enhancement above a basic function repair?

How many times do you want to be stranded by the side of the road with an empty tank?

If the sending unit is bad, the pump may not be far behind.

I see what you're saying but I'm tired of the death wobble and replacing u joints and I'm not really that worried about the pump cuz the gauge hasn't worked since I got it almost 2 years ago.

Also I have not ran out of fuel yet I just fill it up every 150 miles it's usually 12-13 gallons and I'm not sure on the tank size but I believe it's either 18 or 22.
