Fuel Filter

Can anyone tell me how hard it is to check / replace a fuel filter. and how do i know if it needs to be replaced. my jeep is running a little funny every once in a while it kinda will like hesitate for a second but go right back to normal. it like slows down a little and goes back slows down goes back its weird. im thinking its the fuel filter or the fuel pump. if anyone else has any other ideas feel free to share : D

Your fuel filter is in the tank on the bottom of the fuel pump. If you don't want to drop the tank to change it, try installing an in-line fuel filter somewhere upstream of the tank...

What year XJ? The 97+ have the filter in the tank. Here is a writeup on replacing one in a Renix XJ https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f51/re...96-lower-5314/

not very hard... just did mine this weekend.
that write up is but i would also add
unplug the wires by the fuel pump and turn the key/run the jeep to remove the pressure from the line(it should die). then go to the fuel rail in the engine bay and press in the little button to release any remaining pressure.
no need to clamp the line
now you can disconect the old filter. there will still be some fuel in the old filter so have a bucket under it to toss it in.

Fuel filter is on the drivers side, above the rear axle, really easy to change, just leaks alot of fuel when you disconnect the fuel lines. It's pretty cheap preventative maintenance.

cool thanks guys i appreciate all the help. yea im trying to do all kinds of prevenative maintenance right now. i just bought my jeep a week ago. it has 422k miles on it and it still RUNS LIKE A CHAMP !! i have a new found respect for jeeps i dont think ill ever be able to go back to a normal car

Wow that's awesome. I thought mine had some miles, 250k. I saved it from the crusher, and gave it a new life as a wheelin rig.
