Fuel-ethanol mixture in a 1987-1990 4.0L engine
 

Needing help here guys.

In a matter of days we'll be using gasoline-ethanol mixture as fuel here in PTY, so I'm checking everywhere to get any info about using this mixture in my XJ.

Does anybody can tell me or give me some info about this, because I don't want to use that mixture and in a lapse of time using it, I'll have to change the fuel injectors. No way bro.

I heard some issues with a fuel similar to that, with the ethanol making rubber components brittle and possibly more issues with water condensing in the fuel tank. I have no experience using it, so stick around while someone who knows more replies :)

The pertinent question for our XJs is the ratio of gasoline to ethanol.

Generally speaking, mixtures up to 10% ethanol (E10) are okay for vehicles built after 1980 and a goodly percentage of the gas purchased for motor vehicles in the US contains 10% ethanol and has for years.

I don't know if Jeeps built for sale outside the US are built to the same standards as those for sale in the US.

A sad day when the rest of the world jumps on the ethanol bandwagon.

If its just the 10% ethanol mix that most of the country is forced to use anyway, it will be fine. You may lose a little gas mileage with the ethanol mix though. I haven't been able to run straight gas in my XJ in the time I've had it to see if it made a difference, but I know it made a very noticeable difference in my motorcycle, my bike doesn't like ethanol at all.

My rig was made and bought in USA, and the mixture the government approved and made mandatory to use and sell is at 5%, so if my car can handle quite fine 10% mixture, then we're good. I was worrying if that mixture would damage fuel injectors and have to get them replaced.

my 88yj manual says specifically to not use ethanol blends over 8%

I'm not planning to add some other fuel, but as the governments are pushing us, the consumers, to use the damn fuel and other stuff they want us to, we have no remedy at all to use this blends.

My car was designed to use gasoline only, but now we're having this blends that I don't know if they'll be good or bad for our engines.

Let's try some and see what's happening after using it.

ethanol will pahse seperate easier, and by that I mean if it sits, the gas, and alcohol will seperate, then the water the alcohol attracts will sit on the bottom and rust any steel tank. You will see a drop in mileage and depending on how the monitor the mixtures you can get lean running engines etc because its more oxygenated than gas, and will fool 02 sensors.

Any 4.0 EFI should be fine on E10.
