Is there a fuel filter on a 98XJ 4.0? If so where is it?

I believe it is in the fuel tank. Someone knowledgeable please correct me or confirm.

Part of the fuel module assembly. Did some quick research... Yep, in the fuel tank.

So...that is a poor design to have to drop the tank to change the filter. Or is it not meant to be changes?

Yes... But, there is no need to remove the tank to remove the module assembly, at least not according to the Haynes manual. It needs to be removed for 88 and earlier.

I guess I need to invest in a manual...just out of curiosity how do u get it out?

Seems pretty straigthforward. System of lock rings you unlock with a brass punch. Let me try to find a picture and copy the procedure for you.

My bad... The fuel tank does have to be dropped. Sorry about that. Never done it. The Haynes manual is probably for a different type of tank (metal one). The FSM mentions dropping the tank...I do have a plastic tank, I just checked and the fuel pump is on top. But I don't think it is that difficult to drop the tank. I believe there are 2 bolts holding 2 straps, disconnect the lines, etc. There is a write up on another forum. I pasted the link. Take a look at your tank and see if you see the fuel pump assembly in the front of the tank (right behind the axle) or if it is like mine with the connection going on top of the tank.

I will check it out tomorrow....looks like an inline filter under the hood would have been easier. Thanks for all of the info.

Select the Online repair manual, select your jeep year, etc., and pick the fuel system part of the FSM. Procedure to remove the fuel module assembly starts on page 14.

Again, sorry but I haven't done it myself. Wish I could give you better help. Maybe someone will give better directions.

It's not a big deal. You can drop the tank in all of 15-20 minutes. Just make sure you're low on fuel when you do it so it's easier to get in and out.
