Front Pinion Seal
I'm in the process of replacing the front pinion seal on my 2000 XJ and after I removed the old seal I noticed the spline has alot of movement side to side and up and down. Is this normal and if not how do I correct it?

once you put the yoke back on and tighten it up it should be tight again just DON'T over tighten the yokebolt i THINK there may be a cruch collar tightening it too much can throw off the backlash and put unwanted stress on the bearing and cause premature wear. dont put a impact gun on it and hammer it super tight. and you will be fine

no crush sleeve in the xj, mj, or zj front axles, only tj's.
xj uses shims.
torque pinion nut to about 200 ft/lbs.
your outer pinion bearing may need to be replaced.

i can't remember if there was any play the last time i did one. but i don't think so, i would've said something to my buddy to replace it.
but yes, with the nut torqued back down, it should take away the bit of play in there. unless there is just too much.
i believe you can just pull the outer bearing and race cup once you get the seal out. there is an inner bearing that you need to pull the carrier and pinion inside to get to.

I replaced the pinion bearings on my 2000 Cherokee before I sold it, and it had a crush sleeve not shims.

hmm, you are right. i guess the low pinion axle in the 2000-2001 cherokee was borrowed from the tj's. that totally sux. 'nother reason not to own a 00-01 xj.
