Front driveshaft slip joint grease collar has popped loose
I'm not sure what you call the part on the front driveshaft slip joint that the grease nipple is threaded into, so I'll call it the grease collar. I just reinstalled my front driveshaft with new U joints, and when I went to grease the slip joint, the grease collar popped loose. Does this just hammer back down?
Thanks
Thanks

Are you talking about the front propeller shaft....the entire piece that holds the front u joint? If so that could cause a problem because if that came off it needs to go back on the same way, that is, slid back over the splines the same way it came off. If it doesn;t go back on correctly the DS will be out of balance.

Compare the two photos, and you will see the part that has popped loose. I can't figure out what held it on to begin with.
Here is the collar in nearly the right place:
And here it is slipped down:
Any ideas?

I managed to press it back into place, and it is holding. I tried rotating it but there don't seem to be any threads for it to grab on to. Just one squirt from the grease gun starts to press it back off. Still doesn't seem right.

Hummm...I was working on my truck and was looking at my spare DS...It looks like there is some sort of plastic or rubber sleeve under the metal sleeve. If it doesn;t screw on I would imagine it's a press fit. My only guess would be that the plastic or rubber under that metal sleeve has deteriorated or been eaten away and is no longer able to hold that metal sleeve in place. If it was me I would just go to the u pull it and get another shaft instead of fooling with it or taking it to a drive shaft shop. Other than that I'm not sure, sorry I couldnt help anymore. Maybe someone else knows more about it.
