Default Front driveshaft question

I had my jeep up on the car lift last night and i was checking all my u-joints. all were fine but when i twisted the front d-shaft it had play. its an np231 TC and it wasnt in 4wd when i twisted it. should it have some play when not in 4wd or should it always be tight with no play? TIA
