I assume you mean rotatinal play. If its lateral, you have a big problem. If rotational, not as big of a problem. I acutally just had this on my own (2001xj). The shop said that play was normal on these axles, but mine was starting to get larger than normal and to keep an eye on it...they could rebuild it, or I could wait a bit. Keep the fluid levels up and keep an eye on it. Your play may be excessive. A master rebuild kit will put the gears back in mesh where they need to be, and tighten things up, but you are looking at a lot of labor... best find somebody that can do it right for you! I had a shop in SW michigan do mine for $200. thats about the best deal i have found.

that play is most likely in your transfer case. which is normal, as with a bit of play in the pinion.
but if you can hold the shaft on each side of the u-joint, and twist back and forth, and get any play, you'll need to replace the joints.
