front differential stays inguaged
 

I have a 98 cherokee 4x4. In 2wd it still feels line the front end is inguaged. There is no cables or anything conected to it to lock it in? Any ideas?

Have you checked your transfer case linkage to be sure it's shifting out of 4wd? If it's not adjusted properly, 4wd will stay engaged.

I will check. Is there nothing to disengage the front diff though? Alot of 4wd vehicles i have owned did.

In 98 they used the D30 without the disconnect. What that means that is you have no way to engage or disengage your front axle unless you shift in or out of 4x4. I would look at your linkage as they can go out of adjustment and cause problems. I had this happen on mine and it took a while but it was easy to fix.

Thank you! I adjusted the linkage and found out how to spell engaged! Lol bad with spelling. I am still having issues with the front end binding up wben the wheel is turned all the way, like if you had lockouts and they were locked in. Is that because of there being nothing to disengage the differencial or might there be other issues like axle joints or ball joints?

Or could i swap an older front end into it and use a posi-lock? What years could i use?

Pre 91 XJs had the selectable axle, but they are not as strong as the newer non selectable axle. You may have a ujoint in the front axle binding up and causing that jerky feeling.

Agreed. I'd change both if you find a bad one.

I got a '90 Cherokee Laredo. sometimes when the front end doesn't release I back up about 25 ft. or so.
Also, when I can, I put the tranny in neutral and shift out of 4wd while still moving slowly. When stopped I shove it into whatever range I want.
