Front diff, rear diff, T case oil change
so Im going to take this on today, the diffs seem simple enough but I had 2 questions
1. I want new bolts, thread size? bolt size? certain stress rating? # per diff. 2. what oil do you recomend? and how much per diff then, Im less confident about the t case a couple questions 1. what kind of oil? how much? 2. how to drain? I saw a thread once but didnt understand iot clearly. anything to lube? thanks guys |

for my diffs i use 75/90 synthetic but i am also running gears and stuff.

fist step, crack open a cold one.
then, for the diffs, remove all bolts but leave the top one in and loose. then with a mallet, tap the side of the diff until it breaks free. the top bolt will keep the fluid from pouring all over the place. just be sure to have the catch pan below the diff. once most of the fluid is out, remove cover. then clean both mating surfaces with a gasket scraper being careful not to gouge. u can use a drill with a wire wheel. if you wanted to paint the cover, now is the time. then use brake cleaner to clean out the insides good. check to see if you have clutch discs (LSD) in the carrier or spider gears. also inspect the ring gear teeth for damage. use rags to clean out all brake cleaner. then use some RTV sealant around the diff, be sure to go around the bolt holes. then leave for about 5 minutes, then reinstall cover and tighten bolts in a criss-cross pattern, just a bit past tight. snug. (think it's 25-30 lb/ft). then if you have LSD, put in the additive then fill up to the hole with either 75 or 80W90 gear oil till it starts to overflow out the fill hole. the front is the same procedure, just no LSD additive. transfer case is simple, bottom plug is drain, top is fill. use auto transmission fluid, dexron III or mercon. same as you would use on an aw4 xj auto tranny. clean up and finish your beer. |
