Front Axle Noise / Whirring (Video)
I'm hoping you all can help me figure this one out. See video here:
I've had a whirring/siren sound coming from my front axle for a few years. Some days it does it and some days it does not. I'd say the sound is there about 25% of the time. It's either totally there or not at all. The sound goes away at speed below about 10mph and kicks back in when I speed back up. Weird.
The sound tracks with speed and not engine RPM. If I lock up the rear wheels on snow the sound does not go away. The sound does not change if I'm turning sharp. It also does not change if load up either side of the care in a fast turn.
I have not gotten it up on jack stands yet with the wheels spinning because most days the sound is not there. I have replaced the tranny oil, transfer case oil, and diff oil.
My Jeep is a 2001 XJ with 140k on the clock.
Thanks for any ideas!

my first thought is power steering. But as you said it doesnt go with engine speed.
My second guess is transmission. I am guessing it is an automatic. And that is because it goes with vehicle sound and because i had a 79 K10 that had that exactly same sound coming from the tranny. and it was only sometimes mostly when slowing down gradually after 40mph+
what did the tranny fluid look like when you changed it?
But get under there and see what you can find and let us know

Hi, I am having the exact same sound. If you get a notification for this, did you ever get it fixed? And if this goes to the top of the forum, anyone have any idea of what the problem is?

If it coincides with wheel speed rather than engine speed, I'd be looking at wheel hubs, driveshaft u-joints and differential issues.
I have a very slight whine/howl that comes and goes from my rear end that the Jeep shop identified as differential noise, but not anything to worry about.
