Front Axle help

I just bought a '94 cherokee that has already had some work done to it. The down side to this awesome new truck is that the frontend is shot. The truck had 4.56 gears in it when I bought so is it pretty much gonna be impossible to find a front end with 4.56 gears in it? can I put a front end it it with 3.73 gears in it or will this screw up my drive train If I just run it in 2wheel till I can get the gears for the back match?

x2 the only parts in that front end that are different from a stock 355 or 307 are the carrier and the ring and pinion all other part are interchangeable

When Im driving it sounds like its grinding rocks so do you think I just need new gears?

take the cover off the diff and see what is actually going on in there
put it on axel stands so you can turn it to

freegdr 04-10-2011 07:06 PM

pull the cover off take ten minutes see what if any thing falls out

Check for broken gear teeth too!

Check the u-joints on it if its making those sounds in 2WD.

Ok thanks for the info. I'll check it out and take some pictures and post what I find

I did my gears on my k10 a few months back and had the same problem. Turned out that I actually didn't set the gears up correctly. Removed and reinstalled and worked just fine.

I found a tj front axle for a pretty good deal will this fit in my xj? The guy only wants $175 for the whole axle.

seems a little steep, You can go to a u pull it and get it for 100 bucks

ya i know its a lil more then pic a part junk yards but the closest pic a part to me is an hour away and this axle is already out and ready to be picked up.

If the jeep gets 10 miles to the gallon an hour drive is atleast 60 miles, that's 24 $ there and 24$ backso that would be 150 for your JY motor. So offer him 150 and come out even.
