Default Friction modifier or no?

Heh, chalk up another confused person due to a Haynes manual...
I'm getting ready to change the front and rear diff fluids, and it says to use 80W-90 (I think) for regular use in both diffs. A bit farther down however, it says you're supposed to use 2 oz. of friction modifier in the rear diff - all models. I didn't think you had to do that?

correct me if im wrong but ive only used friction modifier for limited slip differentials. i dont see why haynes would tell you to use it. IMHO i would say NO. stick with good old 80w90 gear oil.

You only need to use it if you have limited slip or a locker, you don't need it with an open diff.

Thanks for the replies guys. That's what I was thinking, but the manual seemed to say otherwise...
Oh well, straight 80W-90 it is.
