Almost 100% guarantee it will be the wrong ATF for one thing. Then if you think it really needs to be cleaned and a new filter go to a transmission shop and have it done. The drain and fill several times should work just fine for you.

You ask about the differentials also, do pull the covers and drain the fluid then check for any gear wear. Clean well and wipe out the carrier replace covers. This should be done at least once a year unless you are in water or mud then more often.

You guys are giving poor advise.

BTW it was a very well respected full service automotive repair shop.

Ok that's fine, you can do yours any way you desire and see what the outcome is with an AW4.

Factory Service Manual Recommendation is to drain and fill every 30,000 miles under perfect driving conditions. If you drive in the heat alot, or are undergeared, tow, drive mountains, D&F every 15,000 can't hurt.

Pretty much anyone in here will say to do the drain and refill method.

As for comparing oil to tranny fluid... That's like apples and oranges...

my issue is that when I bought the truck two years ago, it had 81,000 miles
He didn't have any service records because he had just bought it and had to sell it.
I was very good with my previous vehicles, but want the right answer as to have the AW4 flushed and filled with a machine or just drain and refilling a few times.

A few good drain and refills is all you need.

Because people are idiots and use the wrong tranny fluid. ATF 4 or whatever kills trannys. Need to use DexIII/Merc.

So chiming in on behalf of the drain and refill method, that's a great way to do it if you want to keep everything in tact. But as for me, I have a tranny leak at the pan and I'm going to have to replace everything: gasket, filter, and fluid. So I'm just going to throw in some fresh DexIII/Merc.

Drain and refill X>2. Easy peasy with the drain plug. There are too many horror stories on the flush machines. Why risk it when you can easily do the drain/fill?

As for the T-case why not do it also, wont hurt to have clean stuff.
^^^This. X5 or whatever exponent number we're up to.

This strategy works so very well for the AW4, why upset the apple cart? I've done it on so many XJs, I can't recall. Great results.

Don't use ATF+4, no matter what they might tell you if you try to buy your fluid from the dealer. A quick search will yield lots of light reading on that topic.

I'll just leave this here..the AW4 trans doesn't have a filter in the sense as to filter the fluid of contaminants like an oil filter has to.. Its filter is more of a catch/stop metal screen filter.

Its real job is to keep stuff from getting sucked up into the trans..

Here are a few pics of the AW4 filter cut open..you can see how its just a screen to keep stuff from getting in the trans that's it. only on real extreme ordeals I could see changing the filter..but then again I have had the extreme dirty trans a few times from ppls Jeeps I have worked on, did the drain and refill only, all worked out great..

here are those pics

Even the new filter from Power torque says to use Dex III

Like I said way back the flush places only use one trans fluid for everything and not correct for the AW4.

Let me clarify. By flush, I did not mean a machine flush. I will definitely do the drain refill method.
