Stock XJ Cherokee Tech. All XJ Non-modified/stock questions go hereXJ (84-01)
All OEM related XJ specific tech. Examples, no start, general maintenance or anything that's stock.
For starters this fix was done on a 2001 XJ Sport with the 4.0 and automatic transmission.
My issue was neither of my reverse lights worked. I can’t get an inspection sticker in Louisiana without them working, so this is a problem I can’t ignore. Both bulbs worked, I confirmed by swapping with other bulbs that did illuminate. All of my research pointed me to the NSS. Jeep starts fine in park, however, it would not start in neutral. Armed with this information I felt reasonably confident that this was the cause of my reverse light issues. As is normal, my NSS was rusted to the shaft and came off in pieces. Reinstall went fine. Jeep now starts in P and N. Still no reverse lights.
Google, forum posts, Haynes manual all were no help in locating a fuse or relay that could affect the reverse lights. I started my own hunt at the fuse box in the passenger footwell. I know the NSS is wired in with the starter circuit so I got excited when I discovered I was missing the 15 amp fuse in slot ten labeled “starting system”. I popped a fuse in and the reverse lights worked.
Hopefully this helps someone having similar issues.
