Default First Tune Up

I just bought my first ever Jeep and I couldn't be happier with it. It is a 1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredo, standard 4.0 I-6, automatic 4x4, etc. I am planning on one massive tune up for it, and I just wanted some opinions on what goes best with Jeep. I was told for oil filters, go Mopar. I know Im using castrol gtx high mileage for the oil change. As for air filters, spark plugs, etc., I have no idea what would be best. Any help?

What do you plan on doing with the jeep? Is it going to be a Off road beast? A daily driver? A little of both?

No need on spending tons of money on routine maintenance items if you are going to put around town and get groceries and such

Have you considered a switch to synthetics at all? Do you plan on just doing things under the hood? Or tuning up the drivetrain as well?

hey jeep man, how many miles does u're have? for basic tune up, bosch spark plugs, acdelco dist cap, accel plug wires, fram air filter. i would also recommend checking the following: radiator hoses, pcv hoses assembly, breather hose harness & vacuum harness and all the jeep fluids

Prob a bit of both. It has about 193k miles on it, but runs strong and sounds great. I am thinking of using synthetics since I have been told that they work better in preventing gunk and sludge build up. Plus, for now its just gonna be a standard tune up (filters, spark plugs, wires, etc.).

Synthetics are fine but with that many miles you might notice leaks you never had before. Probably be a good idea to look around the oil pan and valve cover for oil leaks. Mopar would be the way to go for the oil filter, I use valvoline and never had any issues with it. Spark plugs, champion has worked. No need to spend the extra money on platinum plugs, the ignition system isn't made to burn that hot of a spark to make them effective. Unless you want to spend the money for a mallory or fire power ignition.

also, real quick, I've noticed that since I bought the Jeep it turns over for a bit then turns on no prob. The guy told me that the old Jeeps, including mine, did that just to build oil pressure. Its not like the thing dies or stalls or anything, runs fine, no noise. Is this oil pressure bit true?

Check with your local dealer , they list a tune-up kit that includes cap, rotor and wires pretty cheap (here anyway) . Welcome to the forum and good luck!

I don't think so, the 4.0 is notorious for this, unless you have a really long crank time which could be an indication of a failing check valve in the fuel pump.

It only cranks about 2-3 seconds? 4 at most. Like I said, nothing dies and no noises. Drives fine. I smell a good amount of fuel in the exhaust when I first turn it on, especially now that it's cold. Any ideas?

Sorry to thread jack..

But what is so special about the MOPAR oil filters?

I've been using FRAM oil filters for ever and I love the Extra Guard filters...

Well, I was considering the same thing. I was just told about Mopar, but I cant find any. I have always gone with Fram, and I never had an issue. I was thinking more along the lines of a Fram Tough Gaurd

Ok I think I've decided on what I'm doing. I am probably going to go Bosch Iridium-Platinum plugs and Bosch wires, I am considering buying a higher voltage ignition coil, K&N Air Filter, Fram Tough Gaurd oil filter, some type of fuel filter, AC Delco Distributor Cap, and Castrol GTX High Mileage oil, or maybe High Mileage Pennzoil.

Tune up kit.. go for the accel tune up kit, can be found at quadratec, jegs, summit, and your local parts store (for a little more money).
For oil filter, I recommend.. Wix/Napa gold (same, but Napa is usually cheaper), Bosch, or Mobile1. Do not bother with Pennzoil unless its full syn. otherwise their product is crap. Non-full syn products I would say Valvoline (dino or syn blend high mileage). Full syn top choice is Amsoil, best you can get. Otherwise Pennzoil Platinum, Royal Purple, or Valvoline SynPower. A dealer (or parts store replacement) ign. coil is just fine.

For air filter, I recommend green filter Item # 2004. Similar to K&N but much better and the oil used is biodegradeable unlike the oil used in K&N's that can harm your engine.

I ordered a blue streak cap and rotor from summit racing. OE replacement, but alot better quality. I also use valvoline 10w 30 oil. I would also suggest a Mopar oil filter, Wal-Mart sells them here. Fram filters drop your oil pressure 10-15 pounds. one oil change place I worked at, they used fram oil filters and we had to pull the packing out of the motor and put back in the filter when we took the oil filter off.
