Fair Price for Complete Used Exhaust
Ya just don't see people buying used exhaust parts too often so I am going to pose my question here to see what you guys think.
I have a 96 XJ that that is getting pretty close to being on its last leg because the frame rails are starting to rot but I need to be able to keep it on the road as long as I can.
At the moment I need to replace the exhaust from the manifold back. I already have a new converter so I would need exhaust and tail pipes in addition to a muffler (about $175 total new).
A guy on Craigslist with multiple parts XJs says he has a complete exhaust already removed from a Jeep. It is still completely assembled with exhaust pipe, converter, muffler, tail pipe, plus O2 sensors. He says the muffler is fairly new and the system as a whole was very quiet.
I am wondering what you guys would think is a fair price for this used exhaust assembly assuming everything is in pretty good shape.
The seller has already thrown a price out there but I am not going to say what it is until I get some opinions.

Twenty bucks. Maybe.
As for your frame rails, I'm currently int he process of replacing one of mine from just in front of the rear wheel well all the way to the back. I'll be posting a thread on it when I get it done. Look for the thread in the next few days.

You completely replacing the frame rail or just patching it up? I will be on the lookout for that thread. Thanks!

If it goes well, I'll be a happy camper. So far so good, but the welding starts tomorrow, so then we'll know.

I would wonder how the heck he took it off completely assembled. I have 2 XJs now (98 and 99) and a 95 YJ.. Those pieces get fused together after a few winters. I guess with an XJ you could unbolt the exhaust manifold and the move the whole thing forward off of the mounts. Getting that out or back in with it all together has got to be a PITA.
Given that and recently pricing a new exhaust system for a 98, I would say 1/3 the price of new just for the hassle. If you have tools to cut/reassemble as needed then maybe it's worth it. If you can at least salvage the cat then it's a bit better. You can get the cheapest walker system from rockauto for $150 but that does not include a cat.
So if you go 1/3, that works out to ~$50 max. I have had good luck with the butt exhaust connectors if you need to cut it to get it back in. Old, rusted exhaust systems just suck.
