Exhaust Leak. Need Help.
where the exhaust manifold and the pipe that leads to the cat connect there is an exhaust leak. infact on the pipe just below where the two meet it is smashed in a little. how concerned should I be with this? is this something I should have repaired asap? hope you all understand.

If the exhaust manifold is leaking around the collector area (where all the pipes come together), you need another exhaust manifold ASAP. Harmful gasses may be coming into the cabin and poisioning you. They can kill you.
You should drive with all windows open and the vent fan on full blast until you get it fixed. Better yet, don't drive it until you can fix it. |

If you can smell fumes I would be concerned,try to tighten the two nuts and see if it is just loose. I have an 89 and the pipe on mine appears to be smashed,but it is actually made like that for clearance,I had to look at some others to make sure.

after further inspection I think I have some answers. the bolts are not loose on the exhaust flange gasket. and I am pretty sure I fond the crack on the exhaust manifold. question. if I am not smelling fumes inside the car should I be as worried about it as firestorm mentioned?

My advise is anytime you have a leak on your exhaust it should be corrected,it can only get worse and actually cause performance issues. With that said i think you have sometime to get to it,if at sometime you do smell fumes,take it off and get it repaired.
It is hard to give advise if it can become a health issue. |

Carbon monoxide (CO) is colorless, odorless, tasteless.
It is absorbed into our lungs/blood much more easily than Oxygen (O2). It replaces the oxygen we need to live. Our body cannot use CO. People who die of carbon monoxide poisoning turn a bright red. Like a cooked lobster. And just as dead. And they don't realize its happening until its too late. Fix the leak. |
