Did it just die or did it actually blow up??? Two completely different thing. What happened to make you think that the engine blew up?

Oh its definately a goner. Its been knocking for a while. It got louder the last few days. Today it sounded like it broke a rod. All kinds of clunking going on. Lol. Then it shut down ratteling its last.

If all you need is the block and lower half, most any year will work. I don't believe there are significant differences.
I'd go with 96 or newer because of the added stiffener girdle and the redesigned piston skirts. (different coating to reduce slap)

Yea it has 180,000 miles on it. Figure its due. Body is still in really good shape. Thought id price fixing it and then decide if its worth the trouble.

i believe the wj blocks are slightly different in how the holes are drilled for the motor mounts, kind of like trying to put a 00 plus tj 4.0 in an xj. wont work.

best off finding any 4.0 out of another wj and possibly a tj and putting it in. more thanlikely if it broke a rod or grenaded a piston the head will be trashed.

XJ
Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

XJ/ZJ blocks and 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1991 to 1995 YJ and 1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.

I might just check the torque converter to torque plate bolts, you are gonna pull that little inspection plate anyway. Crank pulley to.

Would an engine head off a 1997 Xj fit on a 1995 Xj?

About 2 weeks ago, i overheated really bad getting to a friend's house to change out his water pump and thermostat which ended up with me doing the change-out on the side of the road.

Well i wasn't able to get him going due to broken hoses and him not running so i had him towed to said friend's house and continued the work there. Replaced the hoses, put in a new distributor cap, a few other things and had his battery on a charger all night. He wouldn't stay running for long and finding out that the battery case cracked somehow and was leaking acid everywhere so we thought that was the problem so we went to get a new one and got it in and yet he wouldnt turn over fully and run and thats when he started smoking white from the engine block.

So there's the possibility of a blown head but he doesn't have oil and coolant mixed with each other so that kinda throws diagnosis off some, but a psi test to a cylinder registered at 75psi while the others were at around 90psi so that put the blown head back in the game. i haven't taken it apart yet but if i do end up needing a new head, would an 97 fit on a 95?
