Engine won't turn over

I know there's like a bazillion "jeep won't start" threads, but what the hey, the more the merrier.

My wife's '95 Cherokee with auto tranny won't turn over. I'm operating on little sleep, and it's cold as crap out in the garage, so maybe I need a fresh mind working here. I'm going to go out and check the battery; look got blown fuses, etc., but does anyone else have some suggestions?

I didn't realize that you can't take it out of gear when the key was off, so I spent about 15 minutes getting frustrated with that.

Gotta sleep, but car gotta work, first.

Put it in Neutral and try starting it. Wiggle in neautral if you have to. If it starts look into cleaning the Neutral safety switch.

You cleaned and checked the batt cable connections right?

Battery is good, connections are good. Tried starting it in neutral, with wiggling, etc..

Will probably drag it to the mechanic's tomorrow morning. Too tired to safely work on it.

When you say it "won't turn over" does that mean it isn't doing anything at all?..You turn the key and it`s just dead silence?..If there is nothing when you turn the key but you have power for everything else you may have a bad starter or possibly what has been mentioned a bad neutral starter safety switch..If it is the safety switch it`s a pretty easy thing to bypass to get it going...Report back in with more info if you have time this evening.

yeah, i have a stock xj that has a bad neutral start switch.

i just turn the key and hold it in the start position, then very slowly move the shifter slightly around the neutral spot till it starts.

if that doesn't work, i'll just jump the starter with a screwdriver.

it's not on the road yet, it's my next project. so it's only to move around the shop for now.
