Engine Swap
 

I’m looking to swap my motor (2001 XJ 109k miles & dead) for another one. I have access to one that’s been sitting outside for a while (1994 XJ 220k miles). I’m going to have it checked out and I’m wondering if anyone has advice on what to look for. I’m assuming pressure tests, rust, obvious wear n tear. Thanks! Included is a picture of the older engine.

You might have to fab something up to hold the coil rail. Use the distributor from the 2001.

Are you looking to swap just the engine? (I would still buy the whole vehicle if the trans and diffs match)

If so, a full compression test is absolutely critical,

inspect to coolant and engine oil first

What is wrong with your current engine ?

Your 2001 exhaust will not match up to the 94--0720 or next gen 0630 heads Also all the accessories on the 94 use round pin connectors and the 2001 uses flat blade connectors. You will not be able to use the injectors or fuel rail from the 94. The intake and power steering set up is better on the 2001, but you can use the 94 config. You can use the cam synchronizer from 01 on the 94. A handful of other things to cross config in addition to the above.

What's the end goal here, just quick swap so it can still run and drive? Or an engine replacement that you won't deal with for a while?

My opinion from my experiences with sleeping(long sitting) high mileage jeeps is that they are good for trail beaters to get them making noise again and driving without care but offer little convenience for a dependable daily driver.

I would look for another engine that's a more direct replacement. Yes that engine would work with some changes here and there but your likely to invest more into freshening it up and making it work for your application than you may be spending on a fresh pullout from a wrecked/rusted donor. That Jeep has sat for a while for a reason and not because it was someone's dependable daily driver.
