Engine Pull Flywheel Question...
Hey guys n gals...
I'm pulling the engine out of a 98. 4.0 I read that I need to mark the flywheel and torque converter. How do I do that? Can't even see the thing. Do they mean to mark the flywheel and the main pull? Any picts would be nice and helpful... I'd really like this thing to work when I'm done. As always, thanks in advance. |

If you have the Haynes book on the Cherokee, do what cruiser54 said. Burn it. Then go to ebay and buy a download FSM for your Cherokee. I bought mine for like seven bucks. Now I have several copies that I burned to disc in case I lose, destroy one or have a hard drive crash. The only part of the Haynes manual I kept was the front cover page. It had a nice cutaway drawing of a XJ on the cover, at least the older one did. The great thing about the DL FSM is you can keep a copy on your computer and print out just the pages you need for what ever work you are doing. Not need to store the large bulky books version. But some people like the book however it can be expensive to buy.

Glad to hear this. Does it also apply to driveshafts and u-joints? Do you have to mark the drive shaft when you're doing the differential yoke thing? I don't know why that matters-Isn't the shaft balanced no matter which way is up???

By the way, here's something I learned only about 5 years ago. Most of my life I was an ignorant, wrong-headed twit like you! :D
If it's an automatic transmission, you don't have a flywheel. It's a flex plate. Looks a lot like a flywheel to me, but it snot. It's a flex plate. Yet another reason to burn the Hilton/Chaynes manual! Carry on! :cheers: |
. Got the new/working engine in. Bolting it up now. Thanks for the correction. I'll be posting to ask what plug I forgot to plug in when it doesn't start. Probably tomorrow tho. Thanks again all.

All back together. And it STARTED RIGHT UP!
Running a lil rough. Computer needs to reset. But running... The reason I write this. .. I took the hood off. I put it back on when done. I forgot to rebook the release cable... I had it wound up under the hood. Doh! Just a warning for everyone to not get too excited to take a test drive! |
You can pull the headlights and buckets to unbolt the hood catches and get the hood open.

With a freshly sharpened chisel and a hammer you can mark almost anything. Clamping large vice-grips on it might help position it in a tight spot.
Agreed, having other better sources besides the manuals is a must. Still there are lots of pics and info that might be accurate for what you have. |
Flintstone... is it necessary to somehow mark the flywheel to the torque converter? It wouldn't make much sense sine it's a newer engine. I'm not sure though. Just asking.
