Engine problems, blown head gasket?
Hey guys I was driving to work this morning on the interstate with cruise control on and I saw what appeared to be white smoke coming out from behind me. A few seconds later my RPMs drop and my speed started to drop as well. I thought cruise just disengaged, so I gave it gas and the RPMs shot up, but speed continued to drop. At this point smoke was pouring out of the front and back of my jeep, so I pulled to the shoulder. I opened the hood and I see oil on top of the distributor, oil filter, and in the general back left corner of the engine. There is also a good amount of oil on the ground. I checked the oil and the level is still okay and there are no signs of coolant in there. Coolant level also looks the same as it was before this. The only thing I can think of would be head gasket but none of the symptoms are there. Anyone have any ideas?

How's the transmission fluid?

Looked good still from what I could tell. I thought maybe it was that as well, but that wouldn't explain the oil on the top back of the block

Can you start it up to localize that? |
See if it's coming from the exhaust or burning off the engine, exhaust manifold, etc.

So you think it was a transmission line that blew? I didn't think to check them. I'll have to look later when I am able to get back to it and get it towed

haha well that was a thought I had as well since I still had RPMs but no power. and the coolant and oil looked good. But Since I checked the transmission fluid and it looked okay too I ruled that out. So if that's the issue is it as simple as buying new hoses and topping off fluid?

That should do it. I'm thinking it's the rubber hose under the fan. Be a little more than just topping off tho. If that hose or tube broke completely ATF was screaming out of there at about a quart every 10 seconds.
If it's the hose you'll also need that special hose disconnector thing. |
Okay I'll be going back out to pick it up soon, so I'll give it another look. Still think it's strange that there was a good amount of transmission fluid on the dipstick if the hose blew

Well, we know it isn't the power steering pump cause you certainly would have felt that.
So if the oil is good, the coolant is good, and the transmission fluid is good, that leaves only one possibility-- the windshield washer fluid reservoir. |
lol well to be fair I did check the fluid with the jeep off and in park, so that would have an affect on the levels. But if I blew I hose I would expect there to be not much left in the pan at all. Either way, i'm going to check it out now, so hopefully I'll be back later with some updates

A pinhole leak at 40 psi can spray fluid everywhere and if you shut it off quickly may not have lost a lot. The hot line comes directly off the torque converter. Contrary to popular belief, as long as there's metal piping on both side of the rubber section, fuel line rubber hose can be used to repair it with hose clamps, as long as you bubble flare the ends of the tubing so it can't blow off. I've done just that on countless GM cars and trucks.

I'd use 250 psi transmission cooler line if you're going to do a temporary repair. IF that's the problem. And clamp the daylights out it.

Well I just got it towed back to the house and I can get a better look at it now. I’m pretty sure it’s not the transmission lines. Liquid all over the engine looks smells and feels like oil. Engine levels are a drop lower too. But the biggest thing is, looking at the coolant overflow bottle, I’ve definitely lost some coolant since this morning. Dropped about an inch in the bottle. Afraid it may be a head gasket. I’m going to have to pull the spark plugs and see if there’s anything in there and I guess do a compression test. Still strange though since there’s no coolant in the oil. At least not On the dipstick
