engine not turning over
1997 Cherokee Sport 185000 miles new battery, new terminals not curing problem of starter not working. Switch to the crank position and no clicking, no starting. Dash lights, other electrics work. Jumping off won't help. Headlights don't seem to dim any when switch is in "crank" position. Only noise is the fuel pump , I think. I have hit the starter with a hammer ( no results), but don't have a helper to try to crank it while I am hitting it. This started halfway through a water pump and thermostat replacement. Worked until I wanted to test for thermostat leak. Nothing since. Sorry for the long post, but you can tell this issue is a first for me. Thanks.

1 - Make sure your negative cable is tight and corrosion free. Check the battery cable connection to the starter for corrosion, tightness, etc. I know the other electronics work, but do this anyway if for nothing more than certainty. The draw from dash lights is infinitesimal comparted to cranking the starter.
If nothing changes -
2 - Pull the starter and take it to your local parts store for a bench test. If it fires up good on the bench then start testing continuity.
