Engine Coolant Leaking Problems
 

I recently bought a 1994 jeep cherokee sport 4x4 and when i brought it home i noticed the engine coolant was low but there was none leaking, i filled it a little more that the full mark and the next morning there was a huge puddle on the ground and the level marked way low, filled it again a little less this time from the full mark and its still leaking but this time like a dollar coin size on the ground, i noticed that its dripping right above of where the exhaust pipe starts curving down from the headers(I believe thats what there called) and it drops down the exhaust, just wondering where it can be leaking from since im kinda new to Jeeps and i have a big trip planned in 3 weeks and i dont want to drive it like that. I would appreciate any help, Thankyou

There aren't too many places the coolant can leak from near the headers except the freeze plugs. They're known to rust depending on where the Jeep spent its life.

Sounds like your water pump. Check the clamp on the lower radiator hose at the water pump and make sure its tight.

If it's leaking near the exhaust manifold it may be a freeze plug or maybe the head gasket. (That's the worst case scenario). But if it is coming from the front It could be a hose or the water pump. The best way to track it down is clean it all up and dry it off and refill it and keep a close eye on it and try to hunt it down.

Rent a pressure tester from any big name parts store. Adavnce auto, Checker, Autozone, etc.

Use it and don't have guesses on whats wrong. It'll coolant out the hole when pressurized.

I took of the air filter box so i can see the freeze plugs and the third one from the front was wet, couldnt really see it since its behind the exhaust manifold but i touched it and it was the only on that was wet so i think i found the problem, any idea on how much it might cost? I live in CA

I'm not sure how much they would run you. But when you do buy the new one. Don't just replace the leaking one, Buy all of them and make sure to buy the brass not the steel ones or you may have the same problem down the road.

Theres 4 on the left side and the rest you can't get to with the motor in the Jeep. Replace all 4 while your in there. If your paying a shop to do it the price between doing 1 and all 4 of them should only be for parts and their only a couple bucks each.

i havnt had a chance to replace them yet since my alternator went out the same day i posted this, but how hard would it be for me to do it my self, just the 4 on the left side of the block?

Misspoke earlier, theres 5 freeze plugs on the side.
Remove air box, Pull the PS pump from it's mount, Remove PS mount, intake manifold and header. The intake you could pull the fuel and vacuum lines and set the intake on the valve cover to get it out of the way.
Freeze plugs and a intake gasket.

Count yourself lucky I just had to do the freeze plug inside the bell housing.I would gladly have done all 5 of yours instead.:icon_eek:

i did the one in the bell housing when i repaired the transmission. cheap insurance
