Default Engine/Alternator Protection

I was off-roading and hit a big puddle and a rubber mat under the engine almost came off. Only a few screws are still intact. After research I learned that it protects the alternator from mud and dirt. Any recommendations on how to replace the mat with something more protective that won't come off on the trail? What do your XJ's have protecting the engine/alternator?

I made a sheet metal guard for my alternator.
