Ok just to clarify this since I have the same thing.. You have a little box not sure where but under the drivers dash that has a timer and only way to turn it off is to remove the box or what ever it is or have the dealer turn the site off. The purpose is to come on at specified intervals to remind you to check your O2 sensor and other emissions components. That's it. It's not telling ya your jeep is sick or anything at all. I just took the bulb out in the dash.

True. The box has to be replaced; no resettting.
Didn't know they weren't available anymore.
My light is on too in my recently bought '92 Laredo.
I have a feeling that bulb is going to get broken next time I remove the dash bezel.

box is located under the drive'rs side knee board, to the right of the vent @ the knees location.
it is clear, with gears in it.
remove it, toss it, and then turn your truck on and off 5 times. this should turn off the emiss. light. if it doesn't, disconnect your battery for a few minutes and it should be off.
how many miles on your xj? they're supposed to come on somewhere around 80,000 miles.

nope.
I don't have a pic of it....never bothered. always removed and tossed them...
you may need to lay down and look up with a flashlight to see it. it may be screwed in up higher to the bottom of the metal dash support. I can't recall exactly. it's near the engine computer tho.

Nick it looks like an oversized relay and it has gears in it. It is located right in front of the drivers right knee when seated in the drivers seat. Just unplug it. It is not connected to anything excapt that bulb and it will not harm your vehicle to not have it come on every 60-80 thousand miles. I set all my emmisions up on a chack schedule and I take O2 readings twice a year. If the sensor is within tolerances then I do nothing. If it reads outside the tolerances then I replace it. You.ike me. have only one O2 sensor on the downpipe.

Under the instrument panel and to the right of the steering column is a little black box called an Emissions Maintenance Timer. If your Jeep has cruise control it will be hiding behind the cruise control module. There are no screws to turn or buttons to push, you just throw it away and install a new one! Just that easy.
