So my 4.0 just died due to a low end failure so I'm in the business of looking for a new engine instead of a new car. Does anyone know where to get a refurbished one for a decent price 2000-3000. The only place I've found is ATK Motors and their reviews aren't the best.

ATK and Jasper have known to be bad, real bad. I would skip them for sure. Golen would be a good builder but comes with a high $. Send your engine to me and I will rebuild it for you! Jeep engines are cake.

The second hardest part about rebuilding an engine is getting it in.


If you have a good machine shop in town, and a clean place to work, doing it yourself is the best way. Cheapest, too. At the end you will know what you have.

Lots of videos on the Tube. and it doesn't have to be specifically for the 4.0. The principles are all the same.


If that doesn't appeal to you, maybe consider buying a stroker? I've heard some of the stroker builders have good reputations.

Can't stress this enough. When you put it in yourself you know what bolts are torqued to what and what bolts are stripped out that some guy didn't bother to rethread

Would love to see mine as reliable as when new.... what's your going rate?
What type of rebuild do you do on these... say for one that doesn't have anything actually broken...
I know the principles of a rebuild of one of these, but last full rebuild I did many moons ago was horizontally opposed 4 out of a classic Porsche.

5-Speed

Going rate is $800 for the build plus whatever parts are. Going to say if you do rings, bearings, oil pump, lifters, pistons, timing chain, all new gaskets, balance it, bore it and recondition the head, about another $1000. You know I am going to be in TX in either Jan or Feb....

Would you fly on a commercial airliner knowing that some of the parts and even the engines were incident related? Doesn't mean they were damaged, just on the airplane when it was pranged and written off by the insurance company as junk. Same rules apply. Does damage in a rear-ender that totals the Jeep mean the engine was subjected to direct impact damage? Not typically. And, these days Jeeps that get damaged will usually end up in the junkyard rather than in the repair garage because they are not economically repairable outside of hobbyist owner/maintainers.
