electric fan trouble...
 

ok so i know my fan works because when i unconnect the plug for my water temp sensor the fan kicks on. but i dont think it kicks on when i drive. and when most vehicles turn orr the fan stays on to cool them down faster... mine doesnt stay on. whats wrong with my baby and how do i fix it?

The electric fan does not run all the time.........
If your Jeep has Air Conditioning, it will probably turn on that electric fan when the AC compressor kicks on........otherwise, it will only turn on when the engine temp reaches a certain point.
I think mine doesn't turn on until it gets up over 210 degrees?
Yours is probably fine if you've verified that it indeed does work.

X2, I think I saw 213* somewhere. It works as an auxilery when the rest of the bz'ness isn't quite doing it. I think for some reason it comes on on defrost as well as AC. Actually wondered if that is to help avoid cracking the windshield with too hot of air......(when it's cold out of course)

what about wiring the aux fan for more manual control.

its doable, but basically if your stock jeep system isnt cooling properly, you have other issues to address.

I was thinking of the same thing myself, mine gets a little warm when I plow snow.

Alot of people wire them to a switch, to manually turn the fan on to keep the engine cooler at low speeds

Motor gets warm and there's snow on the ground???.......could be a bad/weak fan clutch, among other things.

Make sure if you do the switch project for the electrical fan you do it the right way! I killed an ECM this way! There are kits out there (Read: ways to do it yourself) that will allow it to work correctly without providing feedback into your ECM. Just wanted to let everyone know so they didn't have the same OH S**T moment.

Mine would overheat in the az sun wheelin at 2 mph. I went the manual switch route, never looked back. But yea, do it the right way.. Use a fuse and a relay. It's generally a good idea to keep a fire extinguisher handy... Especially if you were left with a nightmare of finger-twist and electrical tape from the po like me haha.

The relay that runs the fan is in the ECM, there is a 40 amp fuse under the hood that runs the fan and a 15 amp fuse inside the kick panel that runs the relay on a 2000 anyway. Luckily I have a factory Jeep service manual that someone gave me (wiring sucks). To make things more confusing in the book they call the ECM the PCM (power control module).

Pcm is a chrysler thing... it confused me too when I worked at a dealership. **** got really wierd when mercedes came into play
