Default Easy way to tell what version XJ I have?

First off - Hello

How do I tell what version of XJ I have? Mine is registered on a 1999 plate here in the UK. There seems a bit of confusion as to when certain changes were made to the XJs - things like manifolds and injectors etc (the things I've been looking at today) They seem to have changed slightly around 99/00

It's a bit of a pain being in the UK because interesting stuff like mods etc for XJs aren't available here. I need to make 100% sure what I order from the states is right first time

Thanks

Hello EddScott, You can search your vin # on this link. The info is alittle vague on details (no build date) but may show you some info you did not know:

rear axle cover
engine bay

with those we should be able to give you a breakdown of what equipment you have.

I've got some exterior/interior shots in my garage. So I guess it's build date is June 1999?

Put the VIN into the link above and it comes back not recognised.

Well from the VIN and the pictures I can tell you that you have:

a 1999 Cherokee RHD 4x4 Export Model (4-door)
AW-4 automatic transmission
4.0L HO Inline-6 Engine
Dana 35 Front Axle, Dana 30 Rear Axle

The transfer case I'm not sure of without seeing a closeup of that round tag or the shifter inside the truck

That little metal tag on the bottom bolt of the differential cover will tell you your axle gear ratio - it will have two numbers on it. Divide the bigger # by the smaller # to get the ratio. (eg: "39 11" = 3.55 ratio)

As for the engine differences, do you have coil packs instead of a distributor? If so you have the 2000/2001 variant. You almost definitely have the 0331 cylinder head with that build date though, which has problems cracking between #3 and #4, so keep an eye on your coolant levels and oil condition for signs of trouble. You can double check this by looking on the passenger side (for the RHD model) of the valve cover for the number stamped on the top of the head.

Looks like an NP242 from interior pic...

Also looks like there is a distributor from this engine pic...

Thanks guys, thats really good of you.

dukie - this cracking issue, is it at a particular mileage or just as and when it might happen? Mines only done 59K miles. There aren't that many left in the UK with low miles and in decent condition. Offensively high insurance costs and stupid fuel prices makes them a complete lemon in the UK but I love mine.

My mod list:

OME Lift "up to 3" (was going to go for a RC kit but some say it's a harsh ride)
Stainless manifold (impossible to get in the UK)
Panel or induction kit (not sure which but quite like the induction noise )
19lb injectors (When I work out which ones)
60mm ported throttle body (from off here I think)
KC Daylighters (I've had a bumper bar made up ready)

the cracking is random and unpredictable. The biggest thing is to AVOID OVERHEATING the engine, and like I said just keep an eye on the coolant levels. It may not happen at all, or it may happen tomorrow.

Bumpers themselves are OE - do you mean the bar for the spotlights?

If so my GFs uncle is a welder and made one up for me. Theres are OE bars around but ebay only and the last one I had was bent. I was going to get one from the states but again its the cost getting it here.

It's tough getting Cherokee stuff in the UK. Priced up a 2-3" OME lift and it came to $862 - shipping to UK? $752 *****! And at that price and weight customs would slap a few hundred quid more in VAT and duty.

Llama 4x4 have a rough country lift kit for £575 but not sure what it includes - only want new rear leaf no AAL shennanigans L)

Nah not after a OE bumper..thought you may of had a custon one....
Did you try this crowd for old man emu gear http://www.rocky-road.com/xjsus.html

I also am looking for a 3 maybe 4.5 lift and thanks for that link in the UK..
you may of just saved me a small fortune...Tried to ring em but no answer... will try tomorrow..

Also i got a quote from Iron rock offroad in the states for a 3 " kit including full rear leaf pack and lower control arms and the shipping was quoted at 530 usd via fed ex to Ireland....
Your shipping quote sounds very steep...
