The factory exhaust on our '98 4.0L is 2 1/4" from the cat back and the factory muffler is a center in/offset out. My guess is if you want to keep the factory tailpipe, you'll need a muffler with an offset outlet. We're going with a Magnaflow #12256 with a 2 1/2" center inlet and offset outlet. The case is 5" X 8" X 18" and we'll start with a turn down tip and see how that goes. Post some pics when you get-r-done.

i just put in a super 44 offroad eddition muffler on my xj and I love it. You will totally hear a difference. You need a muffler with a center inlet and offset outlet. C/O (center/offset) is what I saw by mine on ebay to show what it was. And yes the piping is 2 1/4. I went to 2.50 on my xj and I really liked it.
