When I did mine, it took a lot of wiggling to get it out, but not as much to get it in. A tip would be to jack up the engine slightly to get more room to slip it in, but it's not necessary. It pretty much just takes patience and some fiddling around with it. Good luck.

yup, it's kinda like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

If you read the write up will take like 30-45 minutes on the ground if you are mechanically inclined. I just did mine in the snowy melty driveway so i could go and play I love it again.

Dropping it from teh bottom is soo easy and instead of wiggling it out use a pry bar or a long screw driver.

Good Luck

My buddy thought it would be good to use a prybar on my alternator and broke off one off the little fins, but I got it rebuilt and it still works fine. So, just be gentle.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I've got to replace the alternator on my 89. It was 6 or 7 years ago but I did it once on an 87 I had, and I don't remember much except that it was a huge PITA and took us several hours. I think the hardest thing was getting it out.

So my question is, what exactly do you guys mean when you say jack up the engie a little? Is there some "play" in the motor mounts that allow it to raise up a bit? Do you just use a floor jack, and where do you place it under the engin? Sorry if those are stupid questions... just never seen it done before.

i have pulled one out the top past the A/c...and slipped it past the frame and out the bottom....

Putting it up through the bottom was easier because i did not have to remove the battery and tray.
