Post Driver side carpet getting wet when it rains through cowling 1997 Cherokee Country

This is a follow up on a previous post I had made about the issue I was having with my carpet getting wet. I found out that the carpet is getting wet from a leak somewhere along the drainways that the cowling leads to. I ran water through the cowling and about 2 hours later noticed the whole driver side carpet was soaked.

Anyone ever had a leak like this and repaired it somehow? I dont know how I would even get to where the crack or hole might be?

Hi

I would check the seals around the wiper wheel boxes, these are the first point to check on any vehicle.

Next check the if water is getting in round the heater box.

Hope this helps as water is a pain to trace as it can come in on one side and travel to the other!

Besides above other helpful areas to check are

1. Where the antenna cord enters the cab near the door. ( I have not had this issue but other have and there is a post on a thread where I have posted. )

2. In my case the windshield was leaking toward the bottom where it drained down creating a puddle under the passenger's feet. Through several iterations of other leaks being fixed in the windshield seal the bottom part rusted a bit creating a leak on the bottom. Off the top of my head it took me 7 trips back to the windshield place to have them finally fix it. Also if this is the case use a factory seal the after market ones seem to generate a lot of wind noise. Today I just got that fixed. Next time I am going to replace the windshield myself -$75.

There are drains in the cowl, yours are probably clogged. Its a very common problem, most people just use a vacuum in the whole cowl because you can't see the blockage.

If you search you'll find its the most common issue with leaking.

Between the back of the hood and the bottom of the windshield there is a 6" strip of grating that allows water to drain to the ground.

Sometimes the drains get blocked by leafs, dirt, and tons of other crap.

I actually ran water through the cowl and saw that it drained, is it still possible its clogged farther down somewhere. Also I have already replaced the windshield.

I think my next step is going to be bringing it to a body work guy to maybe see if he can identify any leaks along the drainage ways the cowling leads to.

It could be the top window seal, it could be the antenna seal, it could be the holes for your roof rack somehow leaking water down onto your floor in the spot.

Have a friend or someone sit in the truck while you put a hose over all the places near where water is getting in. Or trade and you look for the leak.

Eventually you'll find it.

Have you even tried to find the leak this way?

I bet you'll find it.

I Just took my carpet out and herculined the inside. because since water had been leaking in for who knows how long, it was rusty underneath the carpet. Im going to check the cowl eventually though.

You are right, about this being the most common issue with water on the passenger floor. One thing most people do not do when they fill the cowl area with water to check for leaks is they don't look under the rig to see if the water is draining out where it is suppose to drain. Vacuuming is a good idea, I have also used 40 thousandths safety wire to run the drains to clear them out.
