Downstream Universal o2 wiring

So the PO of my jeep decided to save some money on an o2 and cut off the connector on the harness end to put in a universal o2. Either it's not wired right or the 02 is bad and I need to replace it. My buddy gave me a new bosch universal o2 he had laying around his garage but I don't have any wiring diagram for it and I don't want to trust the PO wiring for the simple fact that I've been fixing all the things he's "fixed" since I've owned the jeep. Anybody know what wires go to what? I'd rather be sure and do it once then play the guessing game. I've been searching everywhere and can't find the proper wiring diagram for my year whic is a 97 btw. Thanks guys

PM or post an email address and I will send the wiring diagram.

Just do yourself a favor and replace the O2 with a new unit. A buddy used a universal from NAPA and it ended up costing him $1300 for a new cat on his Chevy. But hey, he only paid $25 for the O2!

I plan on eventually finding a new connector at the pick n pull to splice in but as of right now there's no cherokees my year in my area to donate so until then I'd rather run with a free brand new universal o2. I have a brand new cat that only cost me 100 bucks. Its a high output magnaflow. If it ends up going bad in the couple months that I'm running the o2 that would suck but I'm not overly concerned as its only 100 bucks. I think it'll be ok though.

Just remember that the down line O2 is different then the upstream sensor, they may look the same but they are not, I think the down stream sensor sends a signal at a lower level of Oxygen present in the exhaust then the upstream.:guns:

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check the part number and make sure its for downstream.

here's an oddball thought but I just checked the inventory on the local pick n pull and they have a 96 cherokee. Does anybody know if the o2 connectors are the same and if I could just rob one off of it? I know there's a big difference between 96 and 97 cherokees I'm just wondering if that part would be different or the same. I need the connector on the harness side in order to do it the right way which is what I'd prefer.

I have a 97 & 96 but I'm not sure if they are the same, follow the link below, you can do a part search thru advance auto, look up a 96 and then a 97 and see if they are the same.

I just checked and they seem to be the same one's for both years thru advance auto.:guns:

Thanks davida!

Thanks davida. I don't know why I didn't think to check myself but yeah it does seem the o2's have the same part number. I'm gonna go hit up the picknpull after work so I can get the right o2 on friday and hook it all up. Thanks for all the help everybody!

That would be cool too. Either way works for me. I'm actually gonna be moving out to the roy area probably in a couple weeks. Where do you wheel out in that area? Out towards Morgan or what?

4x4utahcherokee 06-14-2010 10:07 AM

So I went to the local pick n pull friday hoping to scavenge a o2 harness end from a cherokee and out of ten cherokees there not a single one had a wiring harness. Man that sucks. I hope I figure out something soon

Had someone already robbed them or they just didn't have them?? If worse case scenario I am sure someone can grab one from a JY in their area... I will hit my JY up this week and see if I can't find one... I actually want to grab a used downstream O2 to test and make sure I am not having an issue with my wiring as I ended up with a CEL due to my exhaust hangar being broke, and want to make sure I didn't pull a wire in the harness... don't care about replacing the O2 sensor, just don't want to purchase a new one and then end up with a harness issue...

4x4utahcherokee 06-14-2010 11:12 AM

Yeah somebody had already robbed them. I'm gonna hit up the other junkyards sometime this week. My jeeps running fine for the most part I just have a CEL and the codes saying I'm not getting any type of voltage change in the downstream o2. I've been having nothing but problems with my jeep the last few months. My radiators split on the side. The PO thought it would be wise to remove the fuel filter which also incorporates the pressure regulator and fuel return so that he could put in an inline filter thinking it would be easy maintenance. I wish I would've caught this sooner cause I think it has caused my injectors to start leaking. So now I have to get a radiator, fuel pump assembly, and injectors. I figure since I got to get injectors anyway I'm gonna do the injector upgrade and get the neon injectors and while i'm replacing the radiator I'm gonna go ahead and throw in a secondary tranny cooler. I don't want to just fix my jeep I want to build it:)
