Default Door locks no work - not an electrical problem

1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport

history - I had lots of shorts in the wire harness that goes from the control panel on the driver door to inside the car, so I replace all the wires. Now the windows, mirrors work again. I also have a problem with the power door locks constantly locking and unlocking - and doors and the hatch. I haven't fixed that yet.

So, the problem is in trying to figure out why the doors constantly unlock I opened up the driver door and the passenger door, and then put it all back together. I found that now I can't lock the doors - lock buttons on the doors won't move. I removed the fuse for the power locks, unplugged the circuit board above the dome light, and unplugged the power door module inside the driver side passenger door, as I though that would eliminate the possibility of this being an electrical problem. That did not fix anything. There are two rods under the door panel. One of them moves when the key is turned in the lock or the lock button is pushed. When I have the door panel off, and I'm holding it I can use the key or the lock button with no problem. When I put the panel back on the door the lock button won't move and the key will turn but does not lock or unlock the door. So, this appears to be some sort of mechanical issue. I don't understand what is keeping that rod from moving when the door panel is in place. I've looked for anything that might cause it to bind up, and don't see anything.

Has anyone else had this problem? It's probably something really simple, but I don't see what it is. Thanks.

I have had the same problem but not on my jeeps it was on one of my other cars. My problem was the rod for the locking system was bent and with the panel on it would hit it and not let it move. That is where I would check out and make sure they aren't binding against the panel. Hope this helps at least a little.
