Doing My First Oil Change on the XJ today!
And I had one question. I think I was reading in the manufacturer's manual that a crush washer needed to be replaced everytime you change the oil. Is this true or can I just go ahead and change it?
I decided to use Mobil 1 HM with a Wix filter.

as long as its in good shape and not leaking you're fine. they don't get replaced that often. the newer stuff usually has the seal built into the plug anyway, no need to replace till it leaks

^^^ that happen to mee too, the second time I change the oil to my moms Explorer.. I was like ok mom turn it on.. and all of the sudden, the was a fountain of oil... I had to redrain and take out the filter and then did I notice that the seal of the old filter did not came off.. LOL, my mom was so mad that I made a big mess of oil... in the garage..
to the OP,, just drain, I like to do this with the engine a lil warm bc that way all the slodge at the buttom drains out better, then remove the filter.. put new one on and make sure everything its tight and put in the new oil.. and your done.. check for leaks and ur good
edit:
make sure your drain plug does not fall into the bucket of oil, your draining it on..

Why why why would you double post?
Moving on I finished it up. No leaks. Did it in the rain unfortunately but I needed to get it done. Getting the old filter off was a PITA probably because some bozo tightened it down with a wrench.

So I really don't think it could be attributed to doing an oil change but I noticed my transmission being kind of foolish right after the change.
I now get a rough shift from 1st to 2nd. Like I step on the gas it revs like it isn't shifting then it clunks in.
