does a 1998 have a speedo gear or sensor?
1998 Classic, Auto, 4x4
In my 1997 TJ, I had a speedo gear that I changed out when I went to bigger tires, and I want to know if my 1998 XJ has the same setup. It's been so long ago that I can't remember where it was under there or where I bought it from, but it was just a little plastic gear that I swapped out with the stock one. |
also interested. need to recalibrate my 2000 xj aswell.

I may be wrong, so dont quote me on this
but I think it uses a VSS in the tcase, sends a pulse signal. You can pry get it recalibrated with a code reader capable of that kind of thing. Im sure if Im wrong someone will say something. You could also try this thing called search... |
There is a tooth chart all over google. Call you local speedo shops and dealer with the tooth number and pick one up for your tires.
Defiance is right with VSS, but the computers in our jeeps are dumb and dont program easily. Mine is even flashed and wont program easily |
gear is the easiest located in the transfer case

I didn't ask my question the right way. All I really needed to know is can I change that gear out in the transfer case like the one on my old TJ that I used to have and will it correct the difference in speed with reference to tire size if I use the tire size conversion chart and get the right gear?.

yes you can.
here is a good calc and place to buy: http://www.partsmike.com/tech-help/speedo-gear-calc/ I got lucky and scored my 29 tooth gear for $15 from Daveys. |
