Do rims need clearcoat
Hello Everyone,
I have a question about clear coating. I painted my rims with some rustoleum gloss black after stripping the paint with aircraft stripper and using a etching primer. I have one good coat on there and the primer is white. I'm afraid that if something scratches the rim the white will bleed thru. Do you think I should put a fine key and spray a second coat of black gloss or should I just use clear coat? My understanding with clear coat is it doesn't need to be keyed is that true? I'm thinking take the 1 coat of black then just spray a thing of clear coat. Here is what the stock steel rims look like when cleaned up. I didn't get a chance to clean up the tire yet and I don't plan on replacing the center caps.

I bought a can of the Rustoleum flat black wheel paint, and a can of the Rustoleum clear coat for wheels. It won't stop raining here in KS, I've been waiting to do this for about a week, lol. I'm just gonna rough up the factory grey with steel wool, then Scotchbrite, then clean up the wheel with brakleen and let 'em dry well, then hit 'em with the paint and clear coat.

Awesome. I'll hit it with some scotchbrite then put down a 2nd coat of black.
Yea don't use a paint stripper, it makes the job more time consuming than necessary. I'll hit it the fronts with 220 grit/primer and 2 coats of black.
I'll give clearcoat a try if I get really bored one day. Thanks
