Do I need a new water pump?

Just converted my 89 Renix to an open system. My engine monitor says WT° (water temp) is around 170-195 depending on the situation. Dash gauge stays at about 215 but goes to approx 220-230 if I push it on the highway. New radiator, hoses, cap (16psi), thermostat, fan clutch, and coolant bottle. BEFORE the swap, I would run at about 210 and also get excessively hot going up long steep grades. Haven't driven up any long grades since the swap to test it. Is it possible there is still air in the system that will be worked out? I've only driven it maybe 7 or 8 times since the swap. It warms up pretty quickly at idle, too. Does a water pump sound like it might be a good idea? Or another issue? My coolant level in the bottle has dropped a bit since I finished the swap, but I don't see any leaks. I have to add that about 8 months ago I had my belt pop off while on the freeway due to a mistake, and I drove for about 30 seconds before I could pull off the road, so it was VERY hot since nothing had power.

Water pump is a good bet. Sometimes they get their fins corroded to the point they are moving very little water.

I'd burp it first, if it still does it, do a test for exhaust gasses in the coolant. If that's all good, replace the water pump.

Water Pumps should be replaced as a maintenance item in my opinion. It is cheap insurance especially on these 4.0s.

Can't argue with that.:thumbup1:
