Default Do I have a factory LSD (D44)?

This may be a dumb question but I'm still asking. I'm looking at picking up a D44 for the rear of my '89 XJ. The D44 is out of a Cherokee that had the D44 from the factory. The guy selling it doesn't know too much about it but says it has 3.55 gears and a limited slip in it.

I don't know what I'm looking at when I take off the diff cover- so does it have a LSD? He also says it's a factory LSD...I didn't think the Cherokee D44s came with a factory LSD. Help?

I may be wrong but that looks like an open carrier/spider gears to me.

Just buy a 97-01 Chy 8.25 29 spline and put a locker in it. A direct bolt-in and about the same strength.

This D44 is 2 miles from my work and cheap... it was already under an XJ so it's a direct bolt in- I don't really see the 8.25/29 as being any better in this case.

8.25 XJ axles are available for $100 all day long where I live. The only two companies that make selectable lockers are ARB and OX. That's the drawback. You can get almost anything you want for a D44.

Yep. Squarish carrier is LSD. Rounded carrier is open.

Yes. Limited slips have spider gears...With clutches BEHIND the side gears.

These guys appear to have already identified it for you, but there's one other thing you can do when you have a question about a Dana axle. If you look at the axle tag and find the "Bill of Materials" (BOM) number, Dana has an online tool that will look it up for you and tell you all sorts of things about it.

http://www2.dana.com/expertforms/deabill.aspx

You can find the BOM# by looking at the appropriate spot on the axle tag:

That pic came from this site, which has a lot of useful information about axles in general.
