disapointed newbie
I'll give it one more try. Nobody responded last time. What 2wd automatic transmission will work in my 1997 cherokee equiped with a 5sp manual. What parts are needed for the swap? It's not a fire breathing mudder it's my daily driver. But it's still a jeep. Any help?

I'd say 94-96 since they run in the same factory partsmanual. Now that's not to say a 91-99 won't fit but I haven't ever done this sort of a conversion. I had a buddy who has a 94 XJ and we put a trany and t-case out of a 89 which was an AW4 and 242 and only real issues we had was wiring conversion. Other then that it fit. My suggestion is find a donate and get everything that is attached to the trany, such as t-case,driveshaft plate between trany and motor and all the wiring, cross member and so on.

Thank You. Dont plan on changing to 4wd though. Had a posi installed and I love driving past stuck 4 wheelers/ not other jeeps of course/ really pisses people off when I tell them it's 2wd. Would you know if any other dodge or jeep trans would be a bolt in fit? PS whats a drive shaft plate?

Yu will have to use an AW4 from a two wheel drive vehicle, preferably a Jeep because you will need the controller and wiring.

ol'blue your right, I asked about a 4wd trans and tranfer case because I'm having trouble finding a 2wd drive trans. Loacted a 1996 and was told because it's obd2 that it should work, but was also told it slips. 4wd is easier to find, option of gear reduction and mabye a front axle latter.Any problem with a 4wd trans and transfer now and front axle latter? Thank you guys for the help, new to jeep and lost about what works.

I'm not sure if it would work, but the T-case you want offers the 2WD option on the shifter, as well as Neutral, Part-time & Full-time 4WD and 4-Lo I think.
That way you might be able to drive without a front drive-shaft hooked up and not cause damage to the T-case. I'm not sure though.
